Known as the land of sufis and saints, following the outbreak of an armed rebellion against Indian rule in 1989 , Kashmir has been in the grip of a bloody violence for more that past two decades. More than 70,000 people have been killed, thousands have allegedly disappeared or been killed in custody of Indian forces with the conflict also rendering thousands of women widows and children orphans. The conflict has also taken a toll on Kashmir's collective physche, with doctors treating thousands of people for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other diseases related to mental depression and anxiety. Many Kashmiris, however, have turned to 'pirs or dervishes' ( local spritual healers) for solace. These Kashmiri peers or spiritual advisors provide solace and comfort to the patients with prayers and curative Quranic verses. Muslims all over the world believe that the verses of Quran have healing properties. The spiritual healers also give people amulets. (Photo by Yawar Nazir/Getty Images)
